An Aether type of biome indeed would be interesting. It would be cool if in random areas the sky limit would be three times higher and there would be chains of floating islands housing special mob and tree variants of normal mobs.
These islands of course would have to cast no shadow so you don't get giant shadows all over the place, and the mob AI would need to be tweaked so they don't walk off the islands no matter what.

The nether is technically a biome. The "Hell" biome is currently the only biome in the nether. I believe WorldEdit and other software can change the biome of an area even in the nether, so it should be relatively easy to add more biomes to the nether.

I'd like to see some more mountainous-looking mountains in the game. They tried... and they killed extreme hills biomes.
